HSE issues safety alert about impact of high winds on scaffolding

The HSE has issued a safety alert about scaffold safety in high winds, as well as responsibilities of worker and public safety during extreme weather after Storm Gareth brings down two large sections of scaffolding in London.

Scaffold users and hirers have responsibilities to ensure that scaffolding is inspected following any circumstances liable to jeopardise the safety of the installation e.g. high winds. The inspection should note any defects or issues that could pose a risk to safety, and the actions taken to correct them..

All scaffold inspections must be undertaken by a competent individual that has the appropriate knowledge, training and experience for the type and complexity of scaffold they are inspecting.
